Veterinarian

The veterinarian is the doctor who treats animals. Usually working in a private veterinary clinic, he treats sick animals in much the same way that humans are treated. He diagnoses diseases using blood tests, x-rays and sometimes ultrasound and prescribes medications or gives injections. Many veterinarians perform operations to repair fractured bones, remove gall stones and remove cancerous growths. Most perform the standard sterilisation techniques for dogs and cats, and some vets specialise in treating a particular type of animal, such as amphibians or reptiles. Some vets are employed in public zoological gardens and wildlife preserves, and use darting techniques to sedate and treat animals.
