Surgical Assistant

The assistant is a highly trained professional who performs many of the routine tasks of the surgeon. He follows the patient through all stages of the operation and is responsible for the smooth running of the operating room. He confers with the surgeon and ensures that appropriate equipment is present in the theatre, prepares the patient by inserting an urinary catheter where appropriate, and assists in positioning the patient. During the operation he assists by retracting tissues, performing cauterisation under direction of the surgeon and clamping tissues, among other duties. The assistant is often responsible for closing and suturing the operation wound under the surgeons guidance, and can insert drainage tubes as instructed. The assistant is trained in emergency techniques and can take part in resuscitation procedures.
