Speech-Language Pathologist

Speech is a central part of human life, and the speech-language pathologist works with all types of communication disorders, both in prevention and in therapy. He diagnoses reasons for speech impairment and treats problems such as stuttering and articulation deficits in children and adults. Speech pathologists also treat patients with swallowing difficulties, those who have acquired speech deficits because of stroke or brain injury, patients with cerebral palsy and mental retardation. He builds an individual treatment program for each patient, using appropriate speech rehabilitation techniques to attain patient goals. Some speech pathologists specialise in treating the deaf, and teach sign language, others work with patients who have had surgery of the larynx, helping them use artificial speech aids. Most speech pathologists work in language laboratories attached to hospitals, others work in local education posts.
