Radiological Technician / Technologist

Radiological technicians operate x-ray machines and other sophisticated diagnostic technologies. They receive patients in the x-ray room, explain procedures to them and help them to remove objects which can compromise the image, such as jewelry. They are responsible for positioning patients and equipment, setting the dose of radiation to appropriate levels and presenting good quality images to the radiologist for interpretation. Some technicians operate CT and MRI scanners, and some specialise in fluoroscopy. The technician upholds safety standards and guards against radiation exposure of patients and staff, adjusts and maintains equipment and keeps records of all procedures. Radiological technicians work in hospitals, clinics and specialist dental clinics.
