Podiatrist

The specialist who treats foot problems is the podiatrist, also known as the chiropodist. He advises on measures to prevent circulatory problems in the lower limbs, diagnoses and treats diseases, especially those caused by diabetes and arthritis, and works with high risk patients to prevent the need for amputation. Some podiatrists specialise in biomechanics, using mechanical methods of diagnosis and treatment, others work with sports injuries or work producing orthotics, or medical insoles. Some podiatrists become podiatric surgeons and treat bone and joint disorders. Most podiatrists work in specialised clinics or out patient departments of hospitals.
