Pathologists Assistant

Working under the guidance of the pathologist, the assistant is responsible for many of the routine tasks and simpler tests carried out in the pathology lab. The assistant obtains specimens and prepares them for testing, collates patient history and results of relevant data, keeps patient records and is responsible for laboratory equipment. He deals with paperwork and bills patients, files results and photographs slides and specimens to ensure that a record is kept. He assists in post mortem examinations by obtaining relevant authorisation, taking dictation and recording findings, and coordinates removal of the body after the procedure. He is responsible for all administrative tasks in the pathologists office.
