These specialists work with disabled patients who need artificial limbs or aids. The orthotist works more with additions to the limbs, such as specially shaped shoes or braces and splints, while the prosthetist designs artificial limbs. Working with the patient, the prosthetist defines treatment goals and takes measurements of the part to be made. He makes models and supervises manufacture of the part, and when it is ready he works with the patient in a rehabilitation program to attain maximum mobility and dexterity.
