Medical Dosimetrist
When a physician decides to treat a cancer patient with radiation therapy, he collaborates with the radiation oncologist and the medical dosimetrist. The dosimetrist uses his knowledge of radiation treatment machines and equipment in order to translate the prescription dose set by the oncologist into a treatment plan. He uses computerised techniques and manual computations to determine the best way to deliver the correct dose of radiation in the correct location, and then works with therapist staff to ensure that the patient is properly positioned and prepared. He is involved in student education, and often works researching future treatment methods with other oncology specialists. Most dosimetrists work in hospital oncology departments.
