Licensed Practical Nurse
Working under the guidance of a registered nurse or doctor, these nurses provide basic care to the patient. They feed and wash patients, turn them in bed and help them to get in and out of bed, change their clothes and keep them groomed. They also carry out routine monitoring, take blood pressure and pulse, measure temperature and breathing rate, and record data in the patient record, reporting changes to their supervisors. In some states they give medications and can adjust intravenous drips, and sometimes they are certified to carry out routine tasks for patients on advanced life support systems. They work in hospitals and nursing homes, and sometimes in private clinics.
