Dentist
The dentist is the most highly qualified health professional dealing with the mouth. He often works in a private practice which may be shared with other dentists, or sometimes works in a public clinic. All dentists are qualified to take x-rays, diagnose tooth and gum disease, decide on treatment and carry it out. Dentists use techniques including drilling, laser therapy and minor surgery, inject local anaesthetics and sometimes prescribe antibiotic treatment. Some dentists specialise in a particular field, such as orthodontics or periodontics, and will usually receive patients referred from general dentists. Most dentists are self employed, choose their own hours and charge fees according to their reputation.
