Cytotechnologist

The cytotechnologist specialises in the study of cells. Under the supervision of a pathologist he uses a wide range of techniques to isolate and define cell abnormalities, including those caused by cancer, sarcoidosis and tuberculosis.Usually working in a hospital laboratory, he is often responsible for instruction of other staff and may take part in research. He uses staining and other preparation techniques to make slides, and uses an electron microscope to examine them, reporting his findings to the pathologist. Some cytotechnologists work in teaching or in full time research in private laboratories.
